Mortgage Rate Rose This Week to Highest In 10 Weeks
In a notable shift, the average long-term U.S. mortgage rate climbed to its highest point in 10 weeks, introducing a challenge for potential homebuyers gearing up for the upcoming spring homebuying season. According to mortgage buyer Freddie Mac, the average rate on a 30-year mortgage reached 6.77%, up from 6.64% the previous week, and significantly higher than the 6.32% recorded a year ago. Additionally, 15-year fixed-rate mortgages, often favored by homeowners in the process of refinancing, experienced a similar uptick, with the average rate rising to 6.12% from last week's 5.90% and surpassing the 5.51% average from a year ago. This surge aligns with movements in the 10-year Treasury yield, indicating that bond investors are growing concerned about the Federal Reserve delaying interest rate cuts due to stronger-than-expected reports on inflation, job market performance, and the overall economy.
