Long-term mortgage rates ease for third straight week, dipping to just below 7%

“The average rate on a 30-year mortgage dipped below 7% this week, the first time since mid-April, offering a modest boost for home shoppers.

Freddie Mac reported Thursday that the rate fell to 6.94% from 7.02% last week. This is the third consecutive weekly decline, following a five-week increase. Higher mortgage rates can add substantial monthly costs, limiting buyers' options.

The 15-year fixed-rate mortgage rate also declined to 6.24% from 6.28% last week. Mortgage rates are influenced by factors like the bond market's reaction to Federal Reserve policies and the 10-year Treasury yield.

Despite the Fed's stance on rate cuts, recent declines in mortgage rates have spurred a 1.9% increase in home loan applications last week. MBA CEO Bob Broeksmit expects rates to continue inching lower this summer.”
