Should You Make Extra Mortgage Principal Payments?
“Once homeowners settle into their homes or achieve financial flexibility, they often wonder, “Should I make extra mortgage payments?” Making extra payments can reduce interest costs and shorten the length of the mortgage, bringing you closer to owning your home outright.
However, making extra payments isn't always the best option for everyone. Kristi Sullivan from Sullivan Financial Planning explains that paying extra toward your mortgage only makes sense if you'll live in the home long enough to benefit from the shortened loan term. Tying up extra funds in mortgage payments might not be wise if you're planning to move soon.
Making additional payments reduces your loan’s principal, thereby lowering interest costs over time. But whether or not this strategy fits your financial goals depends on your personal circumstances. For example, homeowners with adjustable-rate mortgages (ARMs) may want to pay extra to reduce their balance before interest rates adjust. Others may find more benefit in alternative uses for discretionary funds, such as paying off high-interest debt or investing.
Ultimately, deciding whether to make extra mortgage payments depends on your long-term plans and financial objectives. Consulting with a financial advisor can help you determine the best strategy for your situation.”
Taqueria Frontera
“Taquería Frontera made a strong debut in Cypress Park's emerging food scene with its soft opening in August, bringing the essence of Tijuana’s taco culture to Los Angeles. The taquería, founded by Juan Carlos "J.C." Guerra, draws its inspiration from his family’s well-known Tijuana chain, Tijuanazo Taquerías. With its authentic Tijuana-style tacos, Frontera aims to spark conversations about border politics, hoping to replace the metaphorical borders between people with the shared experience of enjoying great food.
Though L.A. boasts hundreds of taquerías, it’s rare to encounter one that instantly stands out. Taquería Frontera is one of those exceptions. While Guerra's venture is independent of his father’s successful chain, it has the same spirit and support behind it. The family’s former chain, Taco Nazo, recently rebranded as El Tijuanazo Taquería after settling a cross-border trademark dispute, further refining their identity.
Guerra, who grew up between Mexico and the U.S., is also the owner of Rancho Meat Market in Lincoln Heights, where he first began his taco pop-up. At Frontera, he has assembled a skilled team from Tijuanazo, ensuring that the quality and tradition of Tijuana tacos are preserved. In addition to tacos, Frontera serves specialties like vampiros, tortas, and a rare birria de lengua, with recipes uniquely crafted by Guerra himself.”
